1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson and based on the novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien. The film was produced by the Saul Zaentz Company, and distributed by New Line Cinema. It was released on December 19,2001, and was the highest-grossing film of that year. The film stars Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Liv Tyler, John Rhys-Davies, and Sean Astin. The story follows a group of five adventurers, humans who are chosen to seek out the One Ring and destroy it, before it is able to bring about the end of all of Middle Earth. They are led by Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee. The group travels across the Middle Earth landscape and battle an array of enemies who seek to either stop them or take the One Ring for themselves. Throughout their quest, the group is joined by a diverse collection of individuals, each with their own motivations and skills. While the group is successful in finding the One Ring and destroying it, they are unable to prevent a war between the Free Peoples of Middle Earth and the Dark Lord Sauron as a result.

 

2. Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is a 1994 film directed by Robert Zemeckis, and based on the novel of the same name by Winston Groom. The film stars Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, and features Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Sally Field, and Bob Balcke. The film tells the story of Forrest, a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama who is described as a “stupid, stupid man.” Forrest is a Coast Guard Lieutenant during the Vietnam War, and witnesses many historical events in his lifetime including the assassination of JFK and the American Civil Rights Movement. Forrest is also impotent and has no memory of his childhood, as he was born as an adult. Despite his shortcomings, Forrest manages to achieve many great things through his lifetime, including becoming a shrimping boat captain and running for Vice President of the United States on the Democratic ticket. Forrest Gump is one of the most popular and successful films of the 1990s. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as a total of six other Academy Awards.

 

3. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope is the first installment in the Star Wars original trilogy (originally released as Episode IV – A New Hope and later retitled Episode IV – The Empire Strikes Back and Episode V – The Return of the Jedi). The film is set in the distant past, in a galaxy far away, where the good guys are trying to stop the Empire from taking over the galaxy. The Empire is a powerful group of individuals who are trying to take control of the galaxy for their own ends. The two sides battle each other in spectacular space battles, with laser-blasting starships, where the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance. The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and John Williams. The story follows a young man named Luke Skywalker, who is a shy farm boy living on the planet of Tatooine. After an encounter with a group of rebels known as the Rebellion, Luke is taken away from the farm where he lives with his aunt and uncle to be trained as a powerful hero to fight against the Empire. However, due to a force of evil known as Darth Vader, Luke is trained to be a powerful villain who does the Emperor’s bidding. However, Luke’s true nature is shown when he goes to rescue his friends from the Death Star and encounters the Rebel Alliance. Together, Luke, Han Solo, and Chewbacca face off against the Empire, and destroy their main weapon, the Death Star.

 

4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a fantasy film directed by Chris Columbus and based on the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling. The film stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. The story follows an 11-year-old boy named Harry Potter who lives with his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon in a small house in the English town of Privet Drive. Harry is an extremely intelligent boy who lacks confidence, due in part to his dark past at the hands of the evil You-Know-Who. One day, Harry receives a letter inviting him to attend Hog’s Head Academy for Exceptional Children, a school for wizards and witches. He learns that he is in fact a wizard, and possesses great powers. However, Harry discovers that Voldemort, the same evil wizard who had tried to kill him as a child, is back and has found out about his true power. It is up to Harry to defeat Voldemort and save the wizarding world from darkness.

 

5. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is a science fiction film directed by J. J. Abrams and based on the film series created by George Lucas. The film follows an infant who is discovered by Resistance soldiers on a desert planet and raised to fight evil. It stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, and Harrison Ford. The film opens with the First Order, led by Supreme Leader Snoke, attempting to conquer the galaxy. The Resistance, led by General Leia Organa, fights back against the First Order. As a result of the First Order’s attack, the Resistance is scattered and the ship carrying the infant is destroyed. The infant is then taken to the remote desert planet of Jakku, where a scavenger named Rey encounters him. In an attempt to escape Jakku and find a way off-world, Rey encounters an old man named Luke Skywalker, who has been living on Jakku for many years. Luke has lost his powers and lives in seclusion, but helps Rey escape Jakku after she helps him escape from a group of scavengers who are trying to steal from him.

 

6. Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is a 1993 science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the book of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film centers on a genetic engineer who creates a theme park where people are allowed to visit and see dinosaurs. It stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough. The film begins with a team of scientists who have created a theme park where people can visit to see and experience the dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth millions of years ago. The park is a huge success, attracting large crowds of people, until a young boy named Owen finds a set of fossilized bones that reveal that the dinosaurs may have been brought back to life by genetic engineering. Owen’s parents demand that the genetic engineer be brought back to the park and extract the dinosaur DNA from Owen’s body, but the park’s security system prevents this from happening. Pursued by the park’s owner, the young boy flees the park, but is eventually recaptured. The film ends with the park being closed down and the owner being arrested for creating a public menace.
